One cup, two answers. In 2,264 Finnish adults examined at age 46, each additional cup of coffee per day was associated with total testosterone about 0.29 nmol per liter higher, and free testosterone lower, in the same men. This is an association in a cross sectional cohort. It cannot show cause.
Somewhere on the internet a man is telling you coffee is flattening your testosterone. Somewhere else, another man is telling you it is raising it. Now and then they are quoting the same research.
They are both right. That is the interesting part, and it is also why neither of them should be allowed near your blood work.
What was actually measured
A 2026 analysis looked at 2,264 adults from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, all examined at age 46, 47 percent of them men. Finland is a sensible place to ask this question, because Finns drink a serious amount of coffee. Among the participants, 1,076 drank five or more cups a day, 822 drank three to four, 296 drank one to two, and a lonely 70 drank none at all.
Blood was taken fasting. Hormones were measured, body composition was assessed, and the analysis was adjusted for body mass index, education, smoking, physical activity and alcohol.
One cup, two numbers, opposite directions
In the men, after adjustment, higher coffee intake was associated with all of the following at once.
- Higher total testosterone, by about 0.29 nmol per liter for each additional cup per day
- Higher bioavailable testosterone
- Higher sex hormone binding globulin
- Lower free testosterone, and a lower free androgen index
Read that list twice. Testosterone up and testosterone down, in the same men, from the same cup.
Why that is not nonsense
Sex hormone binding globulin is the protein that carries testosterone around your bloodstream. While testosterone is bound to it, it is a passenger. It cannot enter a cell and do anything useful.
Raise that carrier protein and two things follow automatically. More hormone is held in circulation, so the total figure goes up. A larger share of it is bound, so the free portion goes down.
Nothing was created and nothing was destroyed. The hormone was redistributed. It is a small, elegant demonstration of something that costs men a great deal of trouble every year, which is that a lone testosterone result is close to uninterpretable without SHBG beside it.
The strange part about their bodies
Body mass index, waist circumference and hip circumference were similar across the coffee groups. Same figures on the tape measure. Yet the heavier coffee drinkers had lower body fat percentage, lower absolute fat mass, lower visceral fat, which is the fat around the organs that carries the metabolic risk, and higher skeletal muscle mass. The pattern followed the dose.
Same weight on the scale, different body underneath it. Which is a useful thing to know if you have ever been reassured by a normal BMI.
Worth knowing. Body composition here was estimated by bioelectrical impedance, which is indirect and rests on assumptions. The authors flag this themselves.
Now the part that should stop you reorganizing your kitchen
This was a cross sectional study. A photograph of people at one moment. Nobody was asked to change their coffee, so it cannot tell you what would happen if you drank more or less. It shows association, not cause, and the authors say plainly that their findings reflect population level patterns rather than individually detectable clinical changes.
The reverse explanation is entirely alive. Leaner, more active, healthier men may simply drink more coffee, rather than coffee making anybody leaner.
And the wider literature argues with itself. American NHANES analyses have found no linear relationship between caffeine and testosterone, and more recent NHANES metabolite work found inverse associations between caffeine metabolites and testosterone in men. Anyone who tells you this is settled has not read it.
If you were quietly worried coffee was breaking something
The observational evidence does not support that worry. The Health Professionals Follow-up Study found no association between regular coffee intake and erectile dysfunction. A systematic review of 28 studies found no consistent link between coffee or caffeine and semen quality, and where negative findings appeared they were more often traced to soft drinks than to coffee.
The one unfavorable signal in the Finnish data was systolic blood pressure, roughly 1.6 to 3.6 mmHg higher in the heaviest drinkers, measured after an overnight fast without coffee. Modest, and sitting against a broad literature in which habitual coffee drinking is associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and death from any cause.
So what do you do
Drink your coffee. Do not promote it to a hormone strategy.
For most adults, up to 400 mg of caffeine a day is not associated with overt adverse effects, and across many health outcomes the largest risk reductions in the wider literature tend to cluster around three to four cups a day. Two things genuinely worth knowing. Unfiltered coffee, French press and similar, contains diterpenes that raise LDL cholesterol. And caffeine interacts with a number of medications. If you have an arrhythmia or uncontrolled blood pressure, that is a question for your own doctor rather than an article.
The lesson is not about coffee
It is that your testosterone number moves for reasons that have nothing whatsoever to do with your testicles. Your thyroid moves SHBG. So does your liver, your weight, your age. And, apparently, your morning habit.
Which means a man handed one total testosterone figure and a verdict has been given a headline, not an answer. This site sells nothing and prescribes nothing. What a proper assessment actually looks at is set out on the questions page.
